What Really Caused the Vancouver Riot
Share this article on:
Having lived for more than a decade in Vancouver, Canada, but having defected years ago, I watched with some interest the riots of the other night.
For those that missed it, the Vancouver Canucks hockey team lost game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals and soon after much of downtown Vancouver was on fire - cars flipped, shops burned, fights and more.
I was there, living downtown, for the last hockey riot, in 1994. I remember well the smell of tear gas and watching the battle below from my apartment.
ANARCHISTS
As I watched the twitter feeds and the "Vancouver Riot Pics" Facebook page I was waiting for the inevitable.
"This is anarchy!" they shouted. Vancouver's police chief even blamed the entire riot on anarchists in this Vancouver Province article.
As with most things, people were immediately searching for someone to blame.
Those to blame were obvious. Roberto Luongo and the Sedins!
Just kidding. But, really, Luongo was terrible - he was pulled countless times in the playoffs - and the Sedins were -11 and -9 for the playoffs (compared to Bruin's players Bergeron (+15) and Marchand (+12)) - the real question was how did Vancouver even come so close to winning?
However, as bad as the Canuck's star players were they were not to blame for the riot.
And, even less to blame, are "anarchists".
The word anarchist has been skewed over time - mostly by the government and the media - to try to make those who do not like governments out to be people who bomb places and light cars on fire.
The word anarchy comes from the Greek, anarchos, meaning "having no ruler," an-, not, and archos, ruler. And, all anarchism is, is a form of political organization that does not put one ruler, or ruling body, over everyone in a society.
When you understand that, then calling the people rioting in Vancouver "anarchists" makes no sense.
In fact, the people rioting are products of the state and are the opposite of anarchists.
HOW THE GOVERNMENT CAUSED THE RIOT
Rioters - Click to EnlargeAlmost every facet of what happened in Vancouver was caused by the Government.
First, many of the rioters were young people - prisoners in the public education indoctrination camps for the first 18 years of their lives. Is it any wonder that, after 18 years of not being allowed to do anything, that a few people might take advantage of a few moments where they overwhelm/overpower their oppressor's force (the police) to kick over a garbage can or break a window?
Second, the Government has made almost all forms of intoxication illegal - EXCEPT one of the most dangerous ones: alcohol.
Is it not bizarre that your average older person is adamantly against marijuana legalization but does not want to ban alcohol after seeing 100,000 drunken individuals rampage through an entire city? Imagine if those rioters were all "wild and crazy" because they were high on crack cocaine - the outcry against crack would be ear-splitting.
If people had free choice of substances there would, almost unquestionably, be much less alcohol use. Marijuana would likely be used much more regularly - and there is one guarantee that can be made here: If that crowd of goons in Vancouver last night were all stoned on marijuana not one garbage bin would have been tipped over. More likely is that a number of them would go to the park to hold hands and sing some hymns about love - and then eat some potato chips.
Third, Canada is a massive welfare state. Vancouver, being one of the only livable cities in Canada (it rarely gets too cold or snows as opposed to most Canadian cities which regularly see -40C/F temperatures for six months of the year) attracts throngs of Canadian welfare recipients who find their monthly welfare checks can be enjoyed much more in the rain rather than in the freezing cold.
Vancouver's Skid Row - Click to EnlargeBecause of this welfare state there are very large amounts of people in Vancouver who are basically homeless and live off the system. In fact, of the thousands of cities I have visited in more than a hundred countries, I can't remember any place as shady, squalid and dangerous as Vancouver's "East Hasting" area - an area which is only a few blocks from the riots last night. (The photo to the right is just an average day in that part of town - this is not a photo of the riots!)
Many Vancouverites stated that many of the people rioting looked like "poor people from places like East Hasting and Surrey". And, they are probably right.
But, the thing that they don't understand is that the system which they support (socialism/welfare) has created all those people.
In most non-western countries there are no homeless people... for two main reasons. 1) Welfare creates poor people as people decide to forget or not learn any skills and live off the system and, 2) All of the rules, regulations and laws - such as building codes - and inflation have priced many people out of the market for a home.
WHO REALLY CAUSED THE VANCOUVER RIOT?
So, it is clear who is to blame: the Government and its policies. Yet, the Government police chief and the media which just parrots Government propaganda blame the exact opposite... people who weren't even there and who had nothing to do with the riots: Anarchists.
Yes, it must be the anarchists, bellow the people! We wouldn't ever want to actually look in the mirror and see the real cause is the government and its policies which the majority of people support.
And what will be the outcry? You can already guess. We need MORE government! MORE police!
They never learn.

Ok a serious post.lifespan of a Keynesian Economist.Grade 11,12 ......lolYear 1 stuudy. Supply and demand.year 2 WHAT THE FUCK> Year 3 this is some fucked up science. humans are not rational.year 4 Do the math, study the history of civilizations. Come to your own conclusions, but remamber our first assumption is that humans are rational creatures.Easier said than done.whateverYears on. mmmmmmmmmmmmm. maybe they are under the right circumstances, therefore free trade will make us all better offf. A few years of decades of hell, but in the end we will be happier because we connect with eachother. Fuck the selfish. Ignore them lat them do there thing. Have faith that we are rational.
I beg to differ. Over half of the rioters have not even finished grade 7. Let alone speak clearly. But hey, you got to give some credit Jeff to your success to Canada. If you were born in the suburbs of Mexico City, you probably would be doing some thing else with your life
Suburbs of Mexico City? Like Polanco? Ya, I'd probably be a movie star or something, you are right
I can't speak to the issues of Vancouver;only been there once 15 years ago;seemed like a civilized place then."In most non-western countries there are no homeless people". You didn't see people sleeping on the street in India or are you considering that a western country somehow.
Hi Steve, I said "most"... India would be the exception... in fact, Mumbai is probably one of the only cities I've seen more beggars than in Vancouver... lots more.
india, china (even Hong Kong which could be considered very developed), indonesia, large parts of africa, your facts are plain wrong. Whether on absolute numbers or percentage of the population there are more homeless people in the non-western world. I understand youa re trying to be sensationalist to make your point but try to get your facts straight.
You wanna see homeless people? Go to Washington DC. Less than a 5 minute walk from the White House is a total ghetto. You wont hear of much crime though because DC is the heart of the US police state. For every 2 homeless bums there are 3 militarized cops. Home of the brave? Give me a fucking break. How brave is a militarize pig in body armor, glock, and riot shield?
Who are you kidding? Homelessness is definitely the government's creation. Do you really own your home? Try not paying your property taxes for 2 years and see what happens. Taiwan, where I come from, is not as "developed" as Hong Kong, but all the poor people have their own shelter, where property tax is almost non-existent. And if anyone has the will to make money, they can go on any street and setup a mobile cart. Try that in the "developed" countries, you will soon be taken to a police station. Please, wake up, I have never seen so many homeless people until I came to America. Some movies or documentaries may have portrayed otherwise, but you know how the media manipulates your common sense. Yes, it is regulations that give us clean streets, but the same rules have created 43 million US citizens who rely on food stamps.
Movie Star.Probably having just as much fun too
Try going to LA.They say there are about 2200 Homless in VAN.CLOSE to 22,000 in LA. I was one of them for a while. No shelters either. 100's lined up in the street , Didn't get too bothered by the police unless we treated them with disrespectI guess Cali will be the last state to get effected by the "POLICE STATE"people wish I guess, can't blame us withe all the migrant gangs in the west
Actually i was thinking on the street in the hell hole ghetto of Tijauna
Sounds like a black op...another control mechanism to control people through fear...yep...we will see more cameras on the street corners and more police. The people have gone before the false gods once again to be saved . What have they done, create a problem...that they did...and the typical response is reaction, this has been done by the media world wide showing Vancouver as an unsafe place, so what is the solution, we will save you and put all these new control mechanisms in place we will save you because we are your authorities. In a time when society has very little confidence in government (latin meaning of government is to control the mind) so what a better way to create another disaster to invoke the confidence back to the parasites, the mentally sick. Everyone wake-up and see this is one of the oldest military techniques used riots.
Good article Jeff that makes several good points. The only thing I would add is the Mayor's roll in maybe not causing it - but not prefenting it. He damn well should have known there would very likely be a riot if the Canucks lost. He should have taken steps to prepare - but he chose not to - the result was a hell of a lot of injuries and property damage. What amazes me is that NOBODY in the press has picked up on this obvious fact....duh!Best RegardsLouis PaquetteEmerging Growth Stocks

Few good points jack, but I feel I must disagree. Now, I'm as right wing and anti govt as the next Albertan, but I fail to see how this event was sparked by the government. Every city and country have their trouble makers, and some stand out more than others. In this present case some opportunistic vandals took advantage of an emotional situation to create havoc. You claim that these 'anarchists' were merely retaliating against an over controlling government. The solutions to your problem that I can see is eithera) Reduce Govt Influence, in your case the school system (which you failed to directly link to the riots)orb) Increase govt control and law enforcement presence, which would be completely counter to your premise. My argument here is that you cannot blame the welfare state, and the government presence on this sole event, for their are some, even more left-winged, big govt based countries that fly relatively low on the socio-global radar. E.g. Norway, or Sweden. Also, most of the western world, and many locations in the Eastern world, require more or less 12 years of schooling, to maximize the students future potential, yet you seem to make this an isolated case. I travel through downtown Calgary on a daily basis during the winter. I see plenty of homeless. Many of the ones I've encountered and talk to are willing to admit that their failures and struggles are due to their lack of foresight and effort in their younger days. They claim that if they were given a second chance they would take full advantage of what our government has to offer. Finally you stated that "In most non-western countries there are no homeless people... for two main reasons. 1) Welfare creates poor people as people decide to forget or not learn any skills and live off the system and, 2) All of the rules, regulations and laws - such as building codes - and inflation have priced many people out of the market for a home."Your arguments would timidly (if it weren't for begging the question on welfare states breeding homeless) support you reasoning for why western societies have homeless. Please provide stats and examples of why Non-western countries don't have homeless
Peng: thanks for posting! I agree 100% with youJungli: You state that China (even Hong Kong which could be considered very developed), indonesia, large parts of africa have lots of homeless? Have you been to any of those places. I've spent quite a bit of time in China, Hong Kong and Indonesia and I've never seen any homeless people. As Mark stated, there are tens of thousands in LA alone. If you haven't been to those places, you really shouldn't comment.. the media is all propaganda in the US and Canada, meant to make you feel like you live in the best, safest country in the world - when they are some of the worst...
Vancouver Girl: You sound like my kind of girl! Always looking for the real culprits! Any evidence to support that this was a false flag? Wouldn't surprise me at all to hear that the first few cars to be burned were done by cops dressed as rioters... In fact, as Lou pointed out, there was barely a cop to be seen for most of the start of the riot... perhaps that was the plan, to let it get out of control so they could come in and "save everybody"Nalvash: I'm not saying that the public education system is the sole cause of the riot... just pointing out that treating kids like prisoners for 18 years has effects. Here is some other things I wrote on the 'education system: http://www.dollarvigilante.com/blog/2011/5/17/debtucation.html ... but, by far, the biggest cause of the problem that night in Vancouver was alcohol... bar none... yet, where is the outcry to ban it? If 100,000 people on meth attacked an entire city, there'd be no stone left unturned in the War Against Meth. I am not saying alcohol should be banned... I am saying ALL other drugs should be legalized... but the alcohol companies don't like that idea, do they, because being able to grow some healthy marijuana plants in your house for $1 doesn't work as well as you buying a 6pack every day after work
It's Hastings not hasting
Well Jeff I have read your thoughts and the other peoples response to your post and i do not know what to really say. You do give some good points regarding these people that so called caused these riots like how they are not "ANARCHISTS". The cops here in Van have said as everybody knows now "there were anarchists that caused this" this of coarse is bullshit. These kids can not even spell the word anarchists! But i agree with you in saying booze has almost everything to do with this act. One thing i noticed the other day in watching the news here was the top cop (can not remember his name) was asked how many cops were on duty and his response to the question was this "i will not let that information out" he did not want the public to know? I do not get it. Why? He said this was a secrete and did not want the public to know how many were on duty... How and why should this be a secrete to the public? This caused me to think out side the box as they say. Now before you think i'm crazy hear me out. What if the cops knew that if the Canucks lost that there could be a good chance a riot would happen and purposely short staff cops and wanted things to get out of control. Now the reason why is the real question. In todays vancouversun the cops union say that only about 500-700 were possible on the working shift. And they said something like 5000 was required. My point is this now that things got out of hand this gives the cops the chance for the future to ask for more powers. Just like what has happened in the U.S.A. since 2001 9/11. Of coarse not to the same degree but i can see this playing out in where the cops will get more powers and down the road will use then like BIG TIME USE THEM. Because lets think about this, when people like 100000 are drinking ect ect everybody knows the deal you need 1000's of cops to handle crowd control not 500 cops! This smells like a RAT! Yes lots of question i raised and maybe i'm nuts but hey could be.
yet, where is the outcry to ban it? If 100,000 people on meth attacked an entire city, there'd be no stone left unturned in the War Against MethActually you are wrong here. If 100,000 people on Meth attacked the city and there was 10,000 people on Meth protecting the city I would bet on those protecting what they love over the 100,000 Evil doers. They'd be alot of damage but there would be 99,000 people who got there ass kicked to the floor and another 1,000 would proably run before the mob got beaten up.
Jeff maybe you know this or maybe you do not.Why the western world changed there ways. When the israeli athletes were killed by the arab terrorists, some decent governemts realized the only way we can beat these fucking sick assholes is to try and be like themIt does not mean that they are terrorists though they just want to kick there asses in the only way they can try. When people wake up to this they will have more respect of polititans.THINK ABOUT WHAT I AHVE SHARED WITH YOU
While I fully agree with 99% of everything you said, I would argue the welfare state issue. I have never recieved a dollar of welfare money in my life, but I think that it's important to take care of people who cannot take care of themselves but we also shouldn't be shifting a medical burden (the mental illness that is rampant in East Hastings) and making it a financial issue (welfare). If we simply had places that could treat and home people with mental illnesses 80% or more of VanCity's homeless (and homeless related) problems would be solved. I was down at the riots. I will publicly admit that I was there even after the riot act was read and was acting to protect citizens right's and health. I documented cases where police were attacking innocent people (in one case a boy was running up the street and away from the riots.. and he tripped in fell in front of a cop. This boy, no more than thirteen posed no danger to the cop, and was then beaten with the cops night stick and then another cop came over and started hitting him too until I ran close enough to the cops to get their attention and the boy could limp away... they hit me in the arm once and hit my backpack before I was able to flee). I had stated that I was going to attend the riots before they happened, and my main reason for being there aside from the civil rights protections was to provide first aid to people. I had bottles of water, vinegar, bandages, etc that I had used to treat the cuts and scrapes people from broken glass and general trips and falls and such; wash out eyes that had been pepper sprayed; and general first aid. If making sure people don't get their cuts infected, or spend 20 minutes in agony over some pepper spray is a crime... then please lock me up because I will do it every time. Had a police officer come to me for aid I would have provided it to him just the same. This was at first a normal sports riot, but I got the sense while I was there that it became much more than that... all the pent up emotions that people had for the authority which stems from the Americanization of Canada were clearly present. People were chanting "Fuck Harper"... and other more political statements. This unfortunately will just bolster Dictator Harper's argument that we need his spying on citizens police omnibus bill to pass.I moved to Canada from the United States to get away from oppression. I am now just counting the days until we start molesting children in airports here. 1 ticket to Norway please.

You've got it bang on and I use a nearly an identical arguement. I added privatization of the legal system starting with a privatized correctional system that is paid a fee based on the results it produces, i.e. for each year a prisoner they treat does not re-offend. Our current correctional system is basically a university for criminals to learn to ply their trade better. I also discovered that we can't legalize hard drugs like heroine, cocaine and meth while social welfare programs exist. I think it is important to make the distinction that in addressing crime that social welfare needs to be ended first, otherwise it will create an undue burden on taxpayers who have to fund free healthcare and ambulance rides for junkies.

Loved the article and would agree about the pointing of fingers. As an anarchist myself I just shake my head when I hear a riot break out over organized sports and a state funded agency blames us. Really? I mean there's looting involved at riots and anarchists don't believe in taking other peoples stuff that's what governments are for...
The riot is but a taste of what's really happening under all that propagated Vancouver glamour. I have lived in this city for 17 years, seen the Tian An Men Square Massacre in 89 live! Compared to that riot, the results are different, but the causes are the same, hypocritical, money hogging, oppression and government corruption. This riot should be a wake up call to the government that upstaged huge viewing screens in the city, allowed people to be ripped of their money from a planned hockey game, and just "happened" to have 2 police cars to be burnt in the middle of downtown with no police (paid overtime) around. What's worse, the only winners are the owners of the hockey teams and their under the table businesses with the government, why should they care if people are brainwashed, robbed, and corrupted? The inflation this city have experienced is getting worse, there is literally scams everywhere, barely any jobs, and not to mention the constant increase in prices, the increase in corporate lobbyists and corrupt bureaucrats, legalization of criminal acts, lazy police, duplicate public services, introduction of wasteful spending and transit, the introduction of non-democratic taxes with no way out, the list goes on and on.At the end of the day, they're so cowardly to admit any fault, that they stir, beat, and unleash digital watch dogs like "facebook" on young people. Bravo Vancouver, Bravo!Long Long Live Chairman Vancouver! Long Long Live Chairman Vancouver!
