What a week! Thanks to those who joined us at FreedomFest in Las Vegas. What better place to discuss liberty than the epicenter of opulence and avarice?  There was a lots going on here at TDV, so here’s a quick review:

Oligarchy in the USSA

Edwin Tucker discusses the dichotomies of crime and punishment in the USSA.

The US is a great place to be an oligarch.  You are permitted to steal with impunity from people who are too brain dead to notice they are being robbed.  Additionally, in the US it is inexpensive to gain oligarch status. In other societies you have to fight your way to the top and vigorously defend your power.  In the US it only takes a few hundred thousand dollars in campaign donations to buy immunity.

Denise Rich once bribed the President of the USSA to get her criminal husband out of jail. Now she’s renouncing her citizenship.

“Some particularly brainwashed slaves think that anyone leaving their tax farms is some sort of turncoat.  And, when expatriates leave with a large amount of money, many slaves pull out their knives and reveal their bloody fangs and call for that person to be murdered or robbed of his wealth because it is our wealth, as they did with Eduardo Saverin of Facebook who actually whipped Charles Schumer into a frenzy and set off a chain of events that would result in him launching the Expatriation Prevention by Abolishing Tax-Related Incentives for Offshore Tenancy” Act (EXPATRIOT).”

The Brilliance and Bravery of Mises

An excellent piece by Mises.org’s Daniel James Sanchez, reprinted from June’s Free Market, celebrating the genius and legacy of Ludvig von Mises.

But as fate would have it, Mises — whose ideas represented the apogee and fulfillment of the classical-liberal tradition — came on the scene at the precise moment when the Western world completely foreswore that tradition, embraced the total state, and hurled itself headlong toward self-destruction. Peace and the market were abandoned for war and planning. Mises was the ultimate knight of liberalism in two senses: he was the greatest and the last.
