TDV Week in Review July 22, 2012

Back from FreedomFest in Las Vegas, with tales of kidnapping and arrest? The curse of ObamaCare? New options for offshore gold ownership and storage?  That’s just some of the wild week that was here in The Dollar Vigilante universe. Here’s a quick review:

MONDAY, JULY 16

Expat, Meet ObamaCare

TDV’s Legal Correspondent Jim Karger relays an anecdote of a dinner in his home of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, which quickly turns into a scathing indictment of ObamaCare.

And now, with ObamaCare, misnamed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, all Americans, or almost all, are going to have the privilege of paying for that expensive care through the mandatory purchase of insurance which government deems "minimum essential coverage" and if they (you) don't buy it, you will get hammered with a stiff penalty which the US Supreme Court has decided is actually a tax— a tax on not buying something the government wanted you to purchase.”

The Story of When I Spilled My Drink, Got Kidnapped & Tortured

TDV Correspondent Justin O’Connell fills us in on what went down in Las Vegas, updating our reports from the previous week’s The Weekend Vigilante.

“When I spilled half of my drink at a Las Vegas nightclub, I was asked to leave. When I asked for my money back, the real crime commenced, as I was kidnapped by thugs and thrown in a cage.

The laws on the books in the United States detail a vast and complex web on bureaucratese which, in the end, leads to nothing more than ensuring innocent people end up in jail. And, when these individuals end up in jail, they are forced – with weapons – to endure psychological torture and inhumane conditions until they get released.”

Time to Shrug

TDV Managing Editor and Mises Canada Director Redmond Weissenberger takes issue with the President’s contention that entrepreneurship and ingenuity are born of the state.

“Never mind that roads, railroads, and sailing ships in the 19th century were uniformly private. Never mind that the greatest rise in the quality of life in the world occurred before governments had seized monopoly control of the 'education' of 'citizens'. Never mind that in today’s stagnating economic world, the few bright lights are seen in such purely free market areas as cell phones.”

The Weekend Vigilante July 21st, 2012

Jeff Berwick talks about friends, family, cell phones, plans to attend the Global Escape Hatch conference in Bocas del Toro, Panama, and the hefty challenges of entrepreneurship.

“I've gone through that I don't know how many times.  It is not easy to start a company and to have it become successful.  In fact, I can't think of many things much harder.  You will be fighting everyone.  Your own friends and family will almost abandon you, thinking you are crazy, your competitors will fight tooth and nail against you and the government will be trying to stamp you out through taxation theft, rules, regulations, subsidies and tariffs along the way.  It's gotten to the point where I would never even consider starting a business in the western world anymore.  It's just not worth the trouble.”

VIDEOS FROM THE WEEK

No TDV videos this week but here are a number of Anarchast videos released recently that you may enjoy:

JOIN US IN BOCAS DEL TORO, PANAMA IN SEPTEMBER

And don't forget to join us for an incredibly exclusive conference on the idyllic island of Bocas Del Toro in Panama in late September.  Only 150 guests will be allowed and they have blocked off an entire Red Frog Beach Resort just for us so you will know you are in exclusive company.

Jeff Berwick will be there and Ken Johnson, VP of TDV Passports and TDV Offshore will be there.  If you want some one-on-one facetime to discuss your financial and personal future this will be the place to be.  We'll be sipping mojitos poolside and giving you our best consulation on how to get your assets and ass out from whatever oppressive country you currently live.  And many other experts will be on hand as well.  This is the kind of conference where you can walk away with an entire escape plan for you and your family... and have an amazing time in the beautiful Panamanian isles, all at once!

The event is almost sold out but there are a few more tickets available... and you can get $400 off the cost by entering the discount code of "VIGILANTE" here: http://www.globalescapehatch.com/register/.

People from around the world are coming and you'll get the latest scoop on where, how, when and why to get second passports, offshore companies, offshore bank accounts and places to expatriate, should you so choose.

We'll look forward to seeing you there!

Thanks as always for reading or subscribing!

Jeff:While your activities that your describe are often interesting, you, and your respondents frequently use the word "cajones" which, in Spanish means "large box". You probably mean to use the word "cojones" which means, among other things "balls" or "guts". For having lived in Mexico as long as you say you have, I'm surprised you still have little knowledge of Spanish. When I began speaking Spanish as a young teenager, these type of words were the first that I learned! KB
