TDV Week in Review September 8th, 2013

This Article Is Not Gloating
I really want this post not to come off as rubbing my awesome life in Chile in your face. But I'm not sure if that's possible…

That photo overlooks Valparaiso and was taken by McCallister Williams, one of my many new philosophically sound, liberty-loving friends here in Chile. The Galt's Gulch crew were all headed over to a barbecue in Valp'o and we stopped at this vista and snapped a couple of photos. The barbecue was held at the house of another new friend who lives in a very historic part of town. To be exact, he lives in a stunning downtown mansion and he fed us dry-rub Texas ribs and good booze till we couldn't move.
Again, sorry if it seems like I'm rubbing it in about how amazing life in Chile is turning out to be. If anything it's to make you see what you are missing by remaining in the US. My good friend and editor-in-chief, Jeff Berwick, tried for over a year to convince me to take the leap, give up all the physical baggage keeping me tied to the US, and just move to Chile. I want to go back in time and slap myself for doubting him, dicking around and wasting so much time not being in Chile. (Would slapping your previous self violate the non-aggression principle?)
It's not just the beautiful towns along the coast, however. It's not just the sprawling yet inviting capital megalopolis of Santiago. Heck, it's not even just the promise of community in awe-inspiring Galt's Gulch.

What I love most about Chile isn't what it has but what it doesn't have.
Chile doesn't have the thick smoke of the surveillance police state. It saturates the air in Amerika. I felt as if I were choking on it when I was in the States. It would cling to me like clumps of leaden soot, stooping my shoulders and weighing down my steps. But that awful feeling couldn't follow me in Chile. Chile is still a nation-state with a government and I'm still not truly free here, but this is a damned sight better than anything I've experienced in my adult life in the US.
Our host today put it very well. He said that Chile is like America 50 or 60 years ago, back when people just expected the government to stay out of their lives for the most part. America is in the late stages of degenerate empire, in terminal decline. But in Chile the people have had their fill of socialist totalitarianism and fascist totalitarianism. Things here may eventually not be so good, but right now they are great and bound to get better for a long time. I'm so happy that I decided to come down and enjoy it. I hope you do, too.
Regards,
Gary Gibson

P.S. Chile is amazing all on its own and even if this wonderful country hadn't been chosen as the home of Galt's Gulch, I'd still recommend you come check it out. But because Galt's Gulch is here, Chile is also attracting a lot of lke-minded people who love liberty and who are happily and effortlessly forming a community. It's so wonderful to be surrounded by all types of people who have that one thing in common: their belief in self-ownership. These people aren't just running from the worsening conditions in the US; they are here to meet and enjoy each other's company. Click here to join us, too.

Before we get to the review let’s have a look at what you missed in the latest edition of TDV’s Dispatch.
In my “Memory Hole”, I took a look at John Kerry’s charge towards war in Syria. Next, Jeff Berwick had some exciting news about TDV’s global expansion. Then, Ed Bugos updated us on the markets in his “Review & Outlook”.
Greg Bugiak, TDV’s Ilian City group moderator, treated us to an essay on traveling and finding happiness in “Open Your Mind, Open Your Heart and Smile and the World Will Smile Back on You…”.
As he does in each of our subscriber-only publications, Jeff took us on a weekly tour of the absurd stories of statism from around the globe. Finally, we profiled Jörg Guido Hülsmann.

Note to Anarchists: Lighten Up
Jim Karger asks anarchists to temper their rhetoric.
“When I read the screeds of some Libertarians and anarchists, including some of my own, they often come across as strident and arrogant. A good recent example is Paul Craig Roberts, one of the most articulate, well-credentialed critics of the U.S. government. His otherwise well-reasoned arguments are made less persuasive when he engages in name-calling and hyperbole. His excellent piece, "America: Totally Discredited", sounds whiny and even juvenile in places when he uses adjectives like "fool," "moron," and "liars." Hyperbole is neither necessary nor effective in rational argument. Solipsistic name-calling has never caused anyone to wake up. Indeed, belittling others who believe differently, regardless of merit, nets no converts. To the contrary, it results in defensiveness and the closing, rather than the opening, of other minds. One only need to read or listen to Ron Paul who has been a highly effective advocate of libertarian ideals not only because of his genius but because he is likable and his empathy for others radiates from his words and demeanor. Even icons on the left of the political spectrum admire and respect him.”

Galt's Gulch Chile – Where the World is Coming To
Jeff Berwick and Ken Johnson share some important information on the hottest destination spot for those who still value liberty, Galt’s Gulch Chile.
“As mentioned in our last update to you, we've been very busy completing approvals of our community master plan on 7,000 of our 11,000 titled acres, with architecture work and the ecological conceptual master plan design underway. I walked the land several times this past week, in between meetings with the local officials in Curacavi, federal officials in Santiago and the steady stream of clients and new residents visiting GGC. Walking the land makes me realize more and more that there simply are not any bad views or locations to be found throughout GGC…because it truly is an amazing and pristine place. I am grateful to be able to be a part of what our team is doing here, as well becoming friends with our new business partners in Chile, including Guillermo Ramirez and his very nice family, whom many of you have met on your visits with us. We are also always grateful to meet all of the wonderful freedom-minded people who visit us here at GGC.”

We share news of an exciting and ambitious project from Michael Fielding.
“One month from Thursday, I'm setting sail with a group of free-thinkers to perform a radical experiment, trying to answer the question: what happens when people learn to live from the ground-up?
Our team is a group of recent college graduates with a passion for learning unquenched by America's school systems. We've seen how the status-quo works, and we think there might be a better way.
We're skeptical of tradition. We're skeptical of established institutions and social arrangements. We're not convinced we need a central bank to loan money into existence for voluntary exchange to take place. We're not convinced we need a monopoly on the initiation of force to resolve disputes. We're not convinced we need a government to "educate" children. So rather than toying with the idea as a mental exercise, we've decided to run the experiment.”

The Dollar Vigilante Goes Global: TDV Spain and TDV Latin America Launch
Jeff Berwick shares some exciting news about the ever-expanding TDV universe.
"As our next progression, TDV is going global with its message and with its services to help other foreign nationals also escape their own oppressive governments.
We are proud to announce the official launch of TDV Spain and TDV Latin America this week. Both will be fully in Spanish.
TDV Spain's focus will be on helping those in Spain internationalize themselves to escape the coming collapse of the Euro and the Spanish economy (which is already in collapse with over 50% of youths unemployed) and a coming Cyprus-style bank shutdown.
TDV Latin America (TDVLA) will focus on major issues in Latin America and likely will be of great interest to people in places like Argentina and Venezuela which have capital controls and very oppressive governments. As well, TDVLA will also give info and advice to those in some of the more booming economies such as Colombia, Peru and Chile as to opportunities throughout Latin America.”
