What Judge Napolitano Says About Rand Paul Might Shock You
[The following post is by TDV Editor-In-Chief, Jeff Berwick]
Libertarian circles have been in a massive debate about Rand Paul.
Small government libertarians seem fairly split on Rand, finding much of what he says to be "
not that libertarian"
and pure libertarians, also known as anarchists, are also quite split on whether Rand would be good or bad in terms of achieving more freedom and less government.
Rand Paul is, at the very least, libertarian leaning. As one blog wrote, “
He may be a conservative libertarian, or a libertarian conservative, but he’
s a libertarian nonetheless.
But many are asking the question, just how libertarian is Rand Paul?
Many say that he is nothing like his father.
Featured on my podcast, Anarchast, Judge Andrew Napolitano opined that “
Rand Paul is every bit as libertarian as his father.”
Judge Napolitano knows the Pauls well, and claims that Rand “
has a way of expressing things so as to broaden his base.”
Rand appears much more moderate than his father Ron Paul, who “
did not choose to broaden his appeal by broadening his base,”
according to the Judge. Rand is merely trying a different strategy, which makes sense.
The Judge also stated that there are “
things that [Rand] has said recently that cannot be defended from a libertarian point of view”
.
Judge Napolitano believes Rand said such things “
in the heat of a Republican primary where his audience is primarily conservative Republicans and not libertarians.”
Napolitano is “
satisfied to the core of [his] being that if [Rand] were elected President he would govern the same way his father would.”
Judge Napolitano knows the Pauls, and this is a big part of why he believes that Rand would preside over the nation “
with….deep, profound fidelity to principles of liberty.”
Napolitano did say, however, that even if Rand Paul were President he would need a very libertarian congress, also, to accomplish much.
Judge Napolitano said all of this and much more, including the future (or non-future) of America, on Anarchast. Watch the video below:
Next week, on Anarchast (subscribe to the Anarchast Youtube channel here) we will have on Mr. Libertarian, Walter Block, who has also recently come out supporting Rand Paul.
